Oil Painting A Day - Old Tin Shed On Wenmohs Ranch

I wonder why artists are drawn to old decrepit buildings and equipment? Maybe they have more character and that makes them more interesting. Come to think of it the same thing applies to human figures! This building has certainly seen better days and seemed a natural subject to paint.

Painting A Day - Ain't What She Used To Be

These paintings have really gotten me out of my comfort zone and this one is no exception! Landscapes are an area that I haven't explored too much but I would like to do more. The reference was from my last trip to Wenmohs Ranch near Austin. Dena Wenmohs has turned her working ranch into an artist retreat and f I could, I would be there once a week.

Painting A Day - Lime Lemon Lemon

I like the blue background in this one. It is a departure from my usual palette but I think that is a good thing. Painting small is certainly getting me to paint faster which was the goal in the first place.

Painting A Day - Thin Skins

Another one on a 6 x 8 inch RayMar Panel. This one was interesting to paint because of the very thin outer skins on the onions. Red onions have such a beautiful color don't they?

Another 6 x 8 gem on RayMar Plein Aire Panels. I can't believe how much I like these boards as I have always been a 'died in the wool' canvas only painter. These are covered with double oil primed #15 with Belgian Linen. What a delight!

Foot surgery has sidelined my painting on my big easel since I can't figure how to keep my foot elevated and stay on my stool at the same time! I had expected to be back to my current project in three days after the surgery but it looks like it will be several weeks instead.

So............my plein air easel is set up downstairs and here is the result.

This is the first of many.  6 x 8 inches on board

It is surprisingly hard to paint small and boy am I learning a lot.  Stay tuned...........more to come!

Here's another little cactus study. When I get three done to my satisfaction I will frame and then them donate to a silent auction. Money from the auction is used by a local hospital to buy toys and food for struggling families at Christmas.
This is another 5x7 oil and is looking pretty good on my easel.

Today I finished this 5 x 7 cactus study in oil. Now that it is finished I see where a little more yellow in the highlights would have been a good thing. I will fix that before it is signed.

After refining a little here it is again. This is probably against the rules.......but, I am making the rules..right?

Lemons
A painting a day project....another 8x10. This was actually fun! Imagine that. I am learning that Dick Blick Master Sable brushes are my all time favorite. I have tried several others as recommended by respected artists but keep coming back to them.

Garlic
Today I started the painting a day program. The paintings are small and done quickly. The purpose is to strengthen your painting skill by painting often. It also reinforces a strong work ethic. All I have to say about today and this small 8x10 is that it was an humbling experience!.....and I will paint again tomorrow.
